A Balada do Velho Marinheiro é o mais longo e emblemático poema do inglês Samuel Taylor Coleridge que, junto com seu conterrâneo William Wordsworth, é fundador do Romantismo. O olhar apurado para a natureza externa, ao mesmo tempo centrado numa visão interna do artista como criador individual supremo nos oferece imagens poéticas em que a pintura verbal é mais psíquica que visual. A imagem é muito mais fruto da imaginação. Experimentam-se, nesta fase inicial do Romantismo, inovações tanto de conteúdo quanto de estilo e percebe-se uma preocupação com o místico, o subconsciente e o sobrenatural. Além de professor de inglês, o tradutor é estudioso da obra do psicanalista Carl Jung. Pela fusão do conhecimento linguístico aliado a uma intimidade com o conteúdo onírico das imagens de Coleridge, esta tradução é um ganho em relação às anteriormente publicadas no Brasil.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the longest poem in English and emblematic Samuel Taylor Coleridge who, along with his compatriot William Wordsworth, is the founder of Romanticism. The sharp eyes to external nature, while focusing on inner vision of the artist as individual creator gives us supreme poetic images in which the painting is more verbal than visual psychic. The image is much more the fruit of the imagination. We experience at this early stage of Romanticism, innovations in both content and style and we can see a concern with the mystical, the subconscious and the supernatural. Besides teaching English, the translator is a scholar of the work of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung. By fusion of linguistic knowledge combined with an intimacy with the dream content of the images from Coleridge, this translation is a gain relative to those previously published in Brazil.
