Richard II is one of Shakespeare’s finest works: lucid, eloquent, and boldly structured. Today, to some of us, Richard II may appear conservative; but, in Shakespeare’s day, it could appear subversive: ‘I am Richard II’, declared an indignant Queen Elizabeth.
